Other notable wine events coming along for this harvest season:
Rivendell Winery of New Paltz has just opened Vintage New York, a
retail store devoted to New York State wines in the heart of
Manhattan's chic SoHo.
"The whole concept is to take New York
wines over the fashion barrier," says Rivendell partner Susan
Wine. "Their reputation as cheap, sweet and kosher held them
back for too long; now most are fine, hand-crafted boutique
wines. We want Manhattanites to think of New York wines when
they want that special bottle."
Wine is former owner of the Quilted
Giraffe restaurant, founded in New Paltz and then a Manhattan
landmark until 1992. She was "party to the proliferation and
popularity of California wines during that time. "We could
not have done this project with New York wines a decade ago,
but now we have the opportunity to literally grow an industry," she stresses.
Vintage New York stocks 150 wines in 3,500 square feet on
two floors with a tasting room atmosphere. Groceries from
small regional food producers complement the wine and provide
components for picnic and gift baskets. Because the store is
winery-owned, it's the only place around for miles where city
dwellers can buy a bottle of wine on Sunday.
