JUNE 2001 SELECTIONS

LIGHT SUMMER CHARDONNAY BLENDS

Main Selection
Summer calls for light refreshing wines that taste great but won't fill you up. These three winners are just right for beach-pool-veranda sipping on a breezy afternoon. All of them are based on Chardonnay, but each blends in another varietal to tweak the Chardonnay in a unique direction.

1999 Chateau LaFayette Reneau Seyval/Chardonnay
A flowery nose with subtle apple and vanilla aromas. Smooth and crisp with ample fruit. Butterscotch and oak mingle on the palate to produce this truly unique new kind of Chardonnay.

Peconic Bay Local Flavor White
North Fork of Long Island
A delicious blend of Chardonnay with a smattering of Riesling makes this easy drinking, soft and fruity (yet dry) white just the ticket for affordable summer drinking.

1999 Schneider Potato Barn White
North Fork of Long Island.
A highly extracted straw colored table wine with tart melon and grapefruit aromas that lead to a weighty, satisfying palate. 85% Chardonnay, 15% Pinot Blanc.

BORDEAUX BLEND WINES

Alternate Selection #1
These are three of New York's finest new releases of this rapidly growing category. While drinking very well while young, the Optimus and the Pinnacle would benefit from some additional time in the bottle. The Garnet, however, is what we're drinking with every summer grilling adventure.

1999 Swedish Hill Optimus
Finger Lakes - Cayuga
Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc, the traditional varieties of Bordeaux, has produced an elegant, yet full bodied wine. Aged in small oak barrels for one year, this complex wine offers wonderful flavors of cherries, currants, vanilla and spice with silky smooth tannins in the finish.

1999 Gristina Garnet
North Fork of Long Island
Hangar steak, pepperoni pizza, meatloaf, burgers, roast pork sandwiches and pasta in a marinara sauce. This Bordeaux-style blend is comfort food in a bottle.

1999 Standing Stone Pinnacle
Finger Lakes - Seneca
A vibrant and focused red with flavors of dark cherry and red currant, with some appealing herbal notes mixed in. A blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlot.

DRY ROSŸ

Alternate Selection #2
The current state-of-the-art in pink wines in New York is a return to the traditional drier styles of ros„. (Almost) Gone are the insipidly sweet white zinfandel clones, and in are the drier Provencal-style true ros„s most often made from classic vinifera varieties like Cabernet Sauvignon and Pinot Noir.

2000 Gristina Ros„ of Cabernet Sauvignon
Finger Lakes
North Fork of Long Island
made with 100% Cabernet Sauvignon. This wine hase delicate berry and peach flavors and a lovely aroma of fresh cut flowers.

1999 Sheldrake Point Petite Noir
Finger Lakes - Cayuga
This is the wine that will make you rethink pink. A delicious blend of Vidal Blanc, Cayuga and Pinot Noir - it is explosive with mouth filling fruit and fresh, tropical flavors.

2000 Macari Ros„
North Fork of Long Island
Crafted from a blend of Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon, this bright, clean wine is packed with fresh flavors of cherries and strawberry aromas. A medium bodied wine with nice acidity which leads to a refreshing quencher on the palate.
