Merlot, despite what the naysaying writers of
the recent movie Sideways think, is responsible for some of the
most delicious and drinkable wines on the planet. Usually full of
ripe plummy fruit and lush tannins, it is a variety that invites
big gulps of its hedonistic body, long draws of its complex aromas
and will even lay down for a number of years to become a mature
and giving companion to meals if you have the patience.
Long Island has surfaced as one of the really good regions for growing this sensuous wine, and these three consecutive vintage examples will conform that it takes more than a year's sunshine to make the wine...
OK, (jeez) the word is out - NEW YORK IS RIESLING COUNTRY!! There are few places in the world that are as hospitable to this noble variety as the Finger Lakes of upstate New York - and the following three dry wines are some of the best of the new releases:
The previous vintage was 2004 Winner of the Governor’s Cup - New York’s Best Wine. Can it do it again??? Bold, mouthfilling flavors of crisp green apples, juicy peach and subtle tropical fruits. Great fruit/acid balance.
Dry, reserve-style Riesling with vibrant acidity. Mineral notes complement, lime, honeysuckle and pear aromas. Concentrated fruit flavors taper off to a long clean finish.
Crisp green apples. Fruity but dry with classic Finger Lakes varietal character.
Are
you ready for a taste of the nectar of the gods? New York is home
to some of the finest late harvest dessert wines in the country.
With our state-wide cool climate and naturally high acidity, almost
everyone producing a late harvest wine makes a good one and some
are outstanding. Trouble is, the prices of these extraordinarily
expensive wines to make can reach into the strusphere. We are always
on the lookout to find excellent late harvest dessert wines with
character at a reasonable price. Here are three:
Gold Medal Winner! (Taster's Guild International) A proprietary blend of several varieties of grapes. Late harvest inspired with Anjou pear flavor.
Light and sweet with peach like flavors. The perfect accompaniment to peach or berry desserts
This consummate late harvest wine exhibits peach and mango aromas balanced by an erotic, spicy finish that invites another taste
