APRIL 2003 SELECTIONS

SPRING'S A COMING!!

Main Selection
Sauvignon Blanc Originally from the Loire Valley, this popular varietal is grown around the world and makes for a wide variety of styles. Vinified dry, either in stainless steel tanks or in oak barrels, it displays a sprightly, fresh and intriquing wine, often with a touch of grassiness along with the citrus and melon flavors. In Bordeaux it is used for the great dessert wine, Sauterne. In warm climates it makes soft, fleshy wines while in cool regions, like New Zealand, parts of Washington State and (ahem) NEW YORK, it yields intensely flavored wines with distinct acidity and bright fruit flavors. Here are three excellent examples from the North Fork of Long Island;

2001 Castello di Borgese
A rich style of Sauvignon Blanc with flavors of citrus and spice, hints of olives and a soft, melon-y mouthfeel.

2000 Jamesport
Sauvignon Blanc is one of Jamesport Vineyards specialties. Aromas of lemon zest, marshmallow cream, melons and a soft vanilla texture held together by it's natural acidity, this wine is a bold statement of the unique terrior of Long Island.

2001 Osprey's Dominion
Full nose of lychee nuts, this flinty, smoky wine is reminiscent of Sancerre. Clean and smooth with a hint of grassiness, its bright acidity enhances its refreshing quality.

BACO NOIR

Alternate Selection #1
BACO NOIR is a red hybrid grape that was responsible for a number of the early successful New York wines in the 50's and 60's. Grown primarily in the northeastern US, but also in France, it makes a light to full bodied wine that when young can resemble Beaujolais and can age beautifully. if you have never tasted Baco, try these terrific bottlings...

Bully Hill Estate Baco
Keuka Lake
Full-bodied with rich overtones of raspberry and pepper. Enjoy with hardy red meats.

Heron Hill Baco Noir
Keuka Lake
A Soft and full-bodied wine with flavors of blueberry and blackberry. Try it with chocolate.

Knapp Pasta Red
Cayuga Lake
Made for those who want to drink red wine but prefer something a little lighter and sweeter than traditional red.

Concord. You wanted to know what it tastes like...

Alternate Selection #1
Concord is the iconoclastic grandfather of the American wine industry. Grapey, aromatic and full bodied, it is a trip down memory lane for some, and a delicious new taste treat for others. Perfect for your holiday table.

Swedish Hill Country Concord
Cayuga Lake Lake
In just a few short years, this wine has achieved a "cult-like" following. Assertive grapey aromas and flavors and a semi-sweet velvety smooth finish.

Lakewood Abby Rose
Seneca Lake
The nose of this bright crimson wine is a vibrant mix of vanilla and strawberry aromas. Sweet fruity flavors are artfully balanced on the palate by the wine's natural acidity. Its playfully nostalgic palate insists you drop all pretensions, relax and enjoy.

Kedem Concord

A hearty fruity wine. A classic Holiday wine. Kosher for Passover.
